Basics

In The Community

Jesus, who said that he is the light of the world, also described us, his friends and followers, as the light of the world. He goes on to tell us to let our light shine so that people will see our good works and glorify God. In another place in the Bible, Paul writes,

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10)

Jesus talked a lot about His love for those who are poor, hurting, broken and forgotten. Because Flatirons exists to bring the awesome life of Christ to a lost and broken world we choose to serve and love those in our community simply because God loves them.

Listed to the left are a few of our friends and partnerships that exist in our local community. If you would like to know more about opportunities to serve in our community as they develop please contact Marijo Tinlin.

The organization is global in nature but based locally in Boulder, Colorado. iE hosts many events in our local community that provide ways for people to engage with their work. Flatirons has sent teams in the past to come alongside iE in their work to end sex trafficking and aid in the recovery of victims in Mexico City, specifically. Flatirons also hosts a group called Friends of iEmpathize, for individuals who have the desire to partner with the organization on a more long-term basis.

Perspectives

Perspectives is a 15 week course that Flatirons has hosted in the past.  The course examines the big picture of what God has been doing over the past thousands of years. But it is much more than that. The course is also designed to help us find our place in the Story God has been writing – really to help us get closer to seeing things from God’s perspective and joining with Him where He is at work.

The next Perspectives class will be at hosted at Flatirons in August 15 – December 12,  2016. Please visit HERE for more information and to register for the course.

For more information, email Missions or call Darin Locke, the Perspectives coordinator, at (303) 437-4435.

Flatirons Food Drive

Flatirons’ food drive began in 2007 when our student ministry decided that they wanted to make a difference in our community. That event initiated our relationship with the Sister Carmen Community Center in Lafayette. Sister Carmen is now a close community partner and together we are working to break cycles of poverty and transform our community.

Lafayette Campus Food Drive

THANK YOU FLATIRONS
Once again, the people at Flatirons have brought in an AMAZING amount of food for our annual Sister Carmen food drive, even during the predicted “Snowmegedon”. We brought in almost 80,000 pounds of food all the while dodging snowflakes. That is an amazing accomplishment that Sister Carmen is very thankful for and so is Flatirons. You all are amazing!

Crayons to Calculators – Backpack Drive

Thousands of students in our community can’t afford to start school with even basic supplies. We want to ensure every student begins school with dignity and the resources to succeed. In partnership with Crayons to Calculators, backpacks and supplies will be distributed to students in the Boulder Valley, St. Vrain Valley and Jefferson County school districts. Find more info about Crayons to Calculators here.

Outside the Walls

You have heard about flatirons people serving in our community and around the world and maybe you wondered why we do that or how to get involved? Jim Burgen explains why we move outside the walls of flatirons, Ron Barnes shares about our involvement with international partners and Andy Wineman details our involvement with local community partners.

Mountain Community Partners

Rock House

Located just off Exit 240 on I-70 in Idaho Springs, our partner Rock House is a gem in the woods. This organization is the ONLY teen resource center helping middle school and high school kids in Clear Creek County.

The main programs focus on two aspects of helping these kids – mentoring and tutoring. They also offer a free Bible study every Monday night at 6:00pm. These are perfect opportunities for volunteers.

You can be a mentor and have a positive influence on kids through recreation, education, teaching life skills, doing community service projects or just simply helping the kids have some fun. Having a positive, healthy Christian adult in their lives makes a HUGE difference.
Or you could be a tutor and help them with specific academic needs. The local high school graduation rate is low but with the help of tutors and mentors, the kids who go to Rock House graduate well over 90%!

Other volunteering opportunities include teaching music lessons, office and maintenance work and providing meals for the mentoring groups. For more information, check out their website at http://www.clearcreekrockhouse.org or email Clear Creek Rock House

EChO

This 30-year-old ministry in Evergreen offers tons of opportunities to help – a food bank, job center, resale shop and enrichment center. The food bank is housed in the main office location along Hwy 74 with the other options along Evergreen Parkway.

The food bank offers a large array of foods, much of which is provided by local area grocery stores and restaurants and seeks to preserve their participants’ dignity. The jobs center offers job coaching, career development workshops, a computer lab and self-directed Microsoft training. The Resale shop is more like a consignment store than thrift store. The clothing, shoes, home decor and top-notch furniture are excellent quality. For more information, check out their website at http://evergreenchristianoutreach.org.

In just the third year of the West Campus food drive, the people have killed it again! Even after the weekend was postponed due to snow, the folks brought in 11,000 pounds of food! The food was distributed across several mountain area food banks including EChO, Loaves and Fishes and Christian Action Guild. You all are amazing!
