A Call to Sacrifice: Lessons from Veterans and the Heart of Jesus
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13
Whether you’ve served or know someone who has, we all understand that stepping into a role of service requires something deep. It’s not just a choice; it’s a commitment to something greater than yourself. As a veteran, I’ve seen firsthand how serving others has the power to shape you. In many ways, it reflects the love and selflessness we see in Jesus—a life that calls us to sacrifice for others, no matter the cost.
During my 20 years in the military, I had the privilege of serving with men and women who embodied true courage, discipline, and selflessness. They faced challenges that most people can’t imagine, and some even paid the ultimate price. They were willing to put their lives on the line for others, often people they didn’t even know. This spirit of giving up comfort and safety reminds me of the example Jesus set for us. He, too, was on a mission that went beyond His own needs and comfort, driven by a love that changed everything.
Now, military service isn’t the same as the mission Jesus took on, but there are parallels. Jesus willingly took on a mission that required absolute commitment and love. He didn’t just talk about love; He lived it. His words in John 15:13 capture it so well: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” For Jesus, this wasn’t a metaphor—it was His reality. He went to the cross for us, out of love for a world that couldn’t repay Him, even for those who rejected Him.
This weekend, as we honor veterans, I want to extend a personal thank you to every person who has served. Whether you served two years or twenty, you made a choice to stand in the gap, saying, “I’m willing to put my life on the line for others.” Thank you for your courage, your strength, and your dedication. Veterans and their families make real sacrifices that many will never fully understand, living out a calling as believers, that we are all called to emulate. Our sacrifices may look different, but the heart behind them is the same—to serve others with the love and commitment that Christ showed us.
To my fellow veterans, know this: your service matters and your sacrifices leave a lasting impact. You're part of a long legacy of people who answered the call, and though our missions may change, the dedication lives on. As we reflect on our time in service, let’s also remember that we serve a Savior who understands what it means to give everything for the sake of others.
Veteran's Day is a reminder to honor veterans and those who continue to serve. Let’s be inspired by their commitment, and let’s each strive to live out the same sacrificial love Jesus modeled—a love that calls us to put others first and to live with purpose beyond ourselves.
