Cultivating Spiritual Discipline
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. —Matthew 5:6
What do we have in common with cell phones, iPads, and computers? Answer: We all require a charge. Personally speaking, when my charge is sitting below fifty percent, I get frustrated with my family, overwhelmed with my circumstances, and dominated by my emotions.
Can you relate?
The world offers many different “charging stations” ... alcohol, drugs, pornography, sex, obsessive shopping, social media scrolling, excessive eating, and exercising, to name a few. These fill us up for a moment and then leave us hungry and thirsty for more. The problem with the world’s charging stations is that they give us only a short-lived charge. We get the quick fix but then find ourselves back on empty a few hours later. And even worse, this kind of charge tends to create shame, hopelessness, and despair.
Sound familiar?
But when we renew our spirits in Christ, we experience a “holy” charge. As we start our days with prayer, serve others, and read the Bible, we are recharged in spirit. As we fast, memorize scripture, go to church, and connect with other believers, we are recharged in spirit. Listening to Christian podcasts and worship music is also helpful. Through spiritual habits such as these, we grow to be more like Jesus so that we can encourage and love others well.
We should recharge in the Spirit every day so that we can receive what we need to do the Kingdom work God has for us. If we only charge on Sundays, we will find ourselves dead in spirit by the end of the week.
God promises to meet with us and fill us up when we come to Him. God rewards those who earnestly and diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). The Holy Spirit equips us with strength, empowers us, and downloads the wisdom and discernment we need each day.
Even Jesus left the crowds and made time to sit and pray alone with God. Jesus didn’t go to the crowds or His friend group to be filled up, He went to His Father. We should follow His example.
Our spirits were designed to be charged by the Spirit every day. It is through our relationship with Jesus Christ that we experience God's peace, comfort, hope, and promise.
How can you recharge your spirit in Jesus Christ today?
