Have you ever considered the true purpose of religion? This marks the first message of our "Death to Religion" series. In this message, Jim explores humanity's early rebellions and how these events, while disruptive, could not thwart God's ultimate plan. This message reveals the role of religion as a temporary measure before Jesus's coming. It emphasizes Jesus's mission, which goes beyond teaching or healing, focusing on his death and resurrection as a sacrifice for our sins. This act wasn't just for forgiveness but to transform hearts and minds, uniting us under a new kingdom. Discover how Jesus's life, death, and resurrection offer us a way to true relationship with God, replacing religious practice with deep, meaningful connection.

// Community Question: What does everyone think of when they hear the word “Religion?”
// Discussion Questions
- The sermon discussed how religion is insufficient for creating a personal relationship with God. Why is religion, as a system of rules and laws, not enough to achieve a genuine relationship with God? In what ways have you seen religion fall short in your life or the lives of others around you?
- In the sermon, we learned about the profound impact of Jesus's death and resurrection. For believers, it's a transformational experience, leading to a new life with God now and in eternity. How have you personally been changed by the reality of Jesus's sacrifice and resurrection? Additionally, for those who are still exploring faith or haven't yet put their faith in Jesus, what doubts or questions do you wrestle with that hinder you from taking that step? (This is a welcoming environment where everyone can share openly and journey together, regardless of where they currently stand in their faith).
- Read Matthew 16:16-18. The sermon connected Peter's confession that Jesus is the Christ, to Jesus’ plan to establish His church. Why is Peter’s confession that Jesus is God and the Messiah so important? How does understanding Jesus as the Messiah connect with Jesus’ mission to redeem the lost by establishing His church? How can you grow in your own faith and understanding of Jesus as the Christ?
- Read Matthew 16:24-26. The sermon challenged listeners to not only believe in Jesus but also to surrender their desires and the things that used to drive and motivate their lives. Why is it important to not only believe in Jesus but also align our desires and motives with Him? What areas of your life might be difficult to surrender to Jesus, and how can you work to align your desires with his?
- The sermon ended with a teaching on discipleship and the requirements for following Jesus. What does it mean to deny oneself, take up one's cross, and lose one's life for Jesus's sake? What are some specific ways you can deny yourself and follow Jesus more closely in your daily life?
