The King With Scars | Week 1
December 8, 2024 | By Jesse DeYoung
Have you ever felt helpless—like you couldn’t take another step on your own? Imagine willingly choosing that. Jesus, the King of Kings, did just that when He left the glory of heaven to be with us. He didn’t just sympathize; He got in the battle with us—scars, pain, rejection, and all. This week, we dive into Matthew 1 and Philippians 2 to explore why Jesus’ story begins with humility and what it means for our battles, our families, and our scars. The King is here, fighting for you.

// Discussion Questions
- Read Matt 1:18-25 Jesse shared about Joseph's situation and the awkwardness of his circumstances when he decided to accept Mary and raise Jesus. Joseph faced a lot of judgment and skepticism from his community when he chose to stay with Mary. How can we relate to feelings of judgment in our own lives? Can you think of a time when you felt judged or misunderstood? How did you handle that situation?
- Read Philippians 2:6-7. The sermon discusses how Jesus 'emptied himself' and took on the form of a servant, emphasizing his humanity. What does it mean for Jesus to be both fully God and fully man? How does understanding Jesus' dual nature affect the way you view your own struggles and challenges in life?
- Read Hebrews 4:15. The sermon emphasizes that Jesus has scars and understands our pain. What are some of the scars in your life that remind you of struggles you've faced, and how have they shaped who you are today? How does knowing Jesus is able to sympathize with our weakness encouraging when reflecting on our past struggles?
- Read Isaiah 53:2-3. Jesse discussed how people often picture Jesus as living a perfect, stress-free life, but He experienced rejection and pain. Why do you think it's important to recognize that Jesus faced suffering throughout His life, not just on the cross? Have you ever felt that your own struggles are ignored or overlooked? How might reflecting on Jesus' suffering change your perspective?
- Jesse shared statistics about kids and family struggles, emphasizing the importance of strong family dynamics. (e.x. 73% of our kids (Gen Z) consider themselves chronically lonely. 57% of our kids are currently taking medication for mental health issues.) What are some practical ways we can support our families to combat the struggles mentioned in the sermon? What steps can you take this week to strengthen the relationships within your family or community?
// Challenge: Take a moment to reflect on the needs of your family. If you are being honest, what areas do you feel you could use some help in? How can this group specifically pray and support you in beginning to address them this week?
