This week’s verses contain a pretty unbelievable story. Have you ever had an experience you were hesitant to share because people wouldn’t believe it if you told them? Share that story with the group.
// Discussion Questions
- Read Mark 5:2-5 These verses describe a demon possessed man whose life had hit bottom. He was a societal outcast, and nobody wanted anything to do with him…except Jesus. Why did Jesus care about this man? What can we learn from Jesus’ example in how we treat others?
- Read Mark 5:6,7 The demon Legion in this verse is terrified and refers to Jesus as the Son of the Most High God, indicating Jesus’ complete authority over it. What does this say about Jesus’ authority/power over evil? What does this say about the confidence in Jesus that we can have when we ask for his help in facing difficult/evil things in our own life?
- Read Mark 5:15 This verse describes the redemption of the former demoniac after his encounter with Jesus. What does Jesus’ ability to redeem the past of the former demoniac say about His ability to redeem ours? Can someone’s past be so terrible they are beyond redemption? Given the demoniac’s redemption, what hope can we have that our own mistakes won’t determine our future?
- Read Mark 5:16-17 Why do you think the people of the Gerasenes, who witnessed the demon-possessed man's transformation, respond in fear and asked Jesus to leave? Has there been a time in your life when you've encountered Jesus and were faced with a choice to accept or reject His authority? If so, how did you respond?
- Read Mark 5:18-20. The demon-possessed man, after being healed by Jesus, shared his story with others in the Decapolis, leading to amazement. Why is it important to share our personal stories of God's work in our lives with others? Can you think of a personal experience in your life where God has shown His mercy and power that you can share with others?
// Challenge: Who do we feel God is asking us to invite to our small group, a service project, or church this week? How many people can we commit to inviting?
