What do you think of when you hear the word rebellion? Do you have a favorite rebel? What makes them one?
// Discussion Questions
- Read Genesis 3:1-5. In the sermon, the serpent tempted Eve by casting doubt on God's command to not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, claiming that God was lying and holding back good things from the woman. Why do you think Eve believed the serpent? Can you think of any life moments when you were tempted or deceived into questioning God's goodness?
- In the sermon, Jim explains Eve's journey through temptation, which involved several stages: A) Being in a place she shouldn't have been, B) Seeing something tempting but knowing it was wrong, C) Contemplating what it would be like to have it, D) Fixating on it, and E) Trying to rationalize it. Can you recall a time when you encountered a similar pattern of temptation in your life? When looking back, which stage of this progression do you believe is the easiest/hardest to resist, and why?
- Read Genesis 3:7-19 Jim explained the consequences of Adam and Eve's actions, such as pain, mortality, challenges, and the desire to control or manipulate others. In what ways do the consequences of Adam and Eve's choice still impact humanity today?
- How does the story of Adam and Eve and their rebellion relate to our lives today? Where do you see rebellion in your life, and how can the lessons from their story help you overcome it?
- Read Romans 5:6-8. The sermon emphasizes that God's plan to rescue humanity was in place before the rebellion, demonstrating His love and grace. How can you apply understanding of God's plan of reconciliation and restoration in your own life, and share this hope with others?
// Challenge: Where in your life do you long for God to reveal His love and grace by atoning for a temptation you've succumbed to? This could mean forgiving the seemingly unforgivable, bringing healing to your brokenness, or even breathing new life into what appeared to be dead. Share and reflect on these areas of your journey with God.
