// Discussion Questions
- Read Matt 19:4-6. Matthew states that marriage is permanent, and that separation is not allowed, highlighting the sacredness of the commitment. Why do you think the idea of 'permanence' in marriage is important? How might viewing your relationship as permanent, even during tough times, change the way you approach conflicts?
- Jim emphasized that married couples should prioritize their relationship over all others, including family and friends. What are some practical ways to leave and cleave to your spouse? Can you think of a recent situation where you chose your spouse over other commitments? How did it affect your relationship?
- Read Ephesians 5:33: This verse calls husbands to love their wives and wives to respect their husbands. Jim pointed out how a lack of love and respect in marriage can lead to seeking it elsewhere. How does this passage shape your understanding of what a healthy marriage looks like, particularly in the way love and respect are expressed?
- Guys, take a moment to think about your relationship with your wife (or consider what you’d like in a future marriage). Are there specific ways she’s shown you respect that make you feel confident saying, “That’s how I know she respects me”? Now, flip the script—how can you be intentional about loving her in ways that truly speak to her unique needs?
- Ladies, reflect on your relationship with your husband (or think about what you’d hope for in a future marriage). Are there moments where he’s shown love that leave you saying, “That’s how I know he loves me”? How can you intentionally grow in showing him respect in ways that meet his unique needs?
- The sermon highlighted that many people feel overwhelmed in their marriages and may contemplate leaving when things get tough. How can we support a friend who is struggling in their marriage? What specific steps can you take to be a supportive friend to someone who is feeling this way without judging them?
// Challenge: Read 1 Thessalonians 4:3. Jim discussed that it is God's will for every Christian, Husband and Wife, to pursue the character of Jesus and avoid sin. What does it mean to pursue the character of Jesus in your marriage? In what ways can you reflect on your own actions and attitudes to ensure a good marriage?
