Still Standing

Knowing God Through His Word | Week 1

October 13, 2024 | By Jim Burgen

What's the most important thing that drives your life? In this message, Jim unpacks the foundational values that shape everything we do as individuals and as a church. He emphasizes that while many things may seem important, not all carry equal weight. Through the lens of Romans, we explore how knowing God through His Word is the first pillar—an essential truth that informs every part of our lives. It’s not about rules; it’s about a relationship, a life built on values that will still stand when the storms come.

// Community Question: What is the best method you’ve used to get to know someone?

// Discussion Questions

  1. In John 17:3, Jesus defines eternal life as knowing 'the only true God' and Jesus Christ whom He has sent. As you consider your personal values, how does your pursuit of truly knowing God influence the choices you make and the way you live?

  1. Jim mentions how prayer is crucial and 'drives everything' in ministry. In what ways can prayer be considered a vital part of your life and faith? Reflect on a time when prayer has significantly impacted your life or the life of someone you know. How can you make prayer a more intentional part of your daily life?
  2. Read Romans 1:16. How does 'For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,' challenge or encourage you in your faith? In what situations do you find it challenging to share your faith? How can you equip yourself to feel more confident in those moments?
  3. Jim emphasizes that Scripture is God's voice and that understanding it helps us know how life works best. What does it mean to 'know God through His Word,' and how can that knowledge impact your everyday decisions? Can you think of a specific decision in your life that could have been influenced by a greater understanding of God's Word? How can you seek that understanding moving forward?

  1. Paul used his Roman citizenship and rights to advocate for the gospel, showing that faith and civic engagement can coexist. What lessons can we learn from Paul's example about living our faith in public spaces? How can you bring your faith into discussions or actions at school or in your community, especially when faced with opposition or differing opinions?

// Challenge: Jim challenged us to think about the values or beliefs that shape the decisions we make in life. This week read Galatians 2:20 and then take some time to reflect on what truly drives your choices—your values. Whether it's how you spend your time, handle challenges, or relate to others. Make a list of 5-8 values that guide your daily life. Next week, come prepared to share these with the group. As we continue through this series, let’s discuss how these personal values line up with what Scripture says. Where do you see your values aligned with biblical principles, and where might there be opportunities to shift your perspective or actions better to reflect God's heart in your daily interactions?
