The Sower and the Seed

February 23, 2025 | By Jim Burgen

Why aren’t we experiencing the full, abundant life Jesus promised? It’s not because the Bible is too hard to understand. It’s not because of our circumstances. It’s because we don’t want to. Jesus’ parable of the sower reveals the brutal truth—God’s Word doesn’t take root in our lives because we’re too distracted, too stubborn, or too consumed by money and success. So, what’s standing in your way? Is your heart ready to receive what God is offering? Watch as we unpack what it really means to live a “with God” kind of life—starting today.

// Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think Jesus chose parables, like the one about the sower and the seed, as a way to teach important lessons about life with God? Can you think of a personal experience where a simple story helped you understand a deeper truth about your life or faith?
  2. Read Matthew 13:19, what does it mean for someone to hear the Word of God but not understand it, and how does that affect their life? Have you ever struggled to understand a message or lesson in church or life? How did that make you feel, and what did you do about it?
  3. Jim explained how the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches can choke out the Word of God in our lives. What do you think the 'thorns' represent in our lives, based on the parable shared by Jesus, and how can they affect our relationship with God?
  4. Jim shared about how tithing, or giving 10% of our income back to God, serves as a spiritual discipline to ensure our priorities align with God's kingdom. Why do you think he believes it helps keep God as a priority in our lives? What steps could you take to assess whether you are prioritizing God over money or material things in your life?
  5. We learned that the Word (Bible) is not just instructions but key to our relationship with Jesus, who wants to grow within us and impact our lives. How does knowing that Jesus is the 'seed' represents the Word of God change your understanding of what it means to allow Him into your life?

// Challenge: Take a moment to think of what ways can you actively invite Jesus into your daily life to ensure He takes root and flourishes in you? Then share you response with your group, then once everyone has shared take a moment to pray for each other and for the roots of Christ to take hold in our lives.
