Is Radical Forgiveness Unjust?
March 2, 2025 | By Ben Foote
What do you do when forgiveness feels like betrayal? In this powerful message, Ben tackles one of Jesus’ most uncomfortable teachings: radical, no-limits forgiveness—even when the wounds are deep. Using the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant, we wrestle with justice, pain, anger, and whether forgiving someone means letting them off the hook. The answer? Forgiveness isn’t about forgetting or excusing—it’s about trusting God to settle accounts so we can finally walk in freedom. If you’re tired of the bitterness cycle, this might be your turning point.

// Discussion Questions
- Jesus tells the parable of the Unmerciful Servant to show us that forgiveness isn’t optional—it’s essential. He even calls us to forgive without limits. Why do you think Jesus places such a strong emphasis on forgiving others, especially when the hurt runs deep? What makes forgiveness so challenging, and what have you learned about it in your own life?
- Ben explains that forgiveness frees us from the weight of anger and bitterness, which can consume us if we hold onto them. He also points out that forgiveness isn’t about whether the person who hurt us deserves it—it’s about our own freedom. Why do you think forgiveness is more about releasing ourselves than it is about the other person? Have you ever experienced freedom through forgiveness in your own life?
- Ben pointed out that we tend to draw lines when it comes to forgiveness—it's easier to let go of small offenses, but major wounds can feel impossible to forgive. What are some examples of minor offenses you’ve found easy to forgive and major ones that have been more difficult? Why do you think it’s so much harder to forgive deep wounds?
- Jesus’ radical forgiveness doesn’t ignore justice—it affirms it. God sees our pain, and He promises to settle all accounts. Knowing that God is just and that He doesn’t overlook our suffering, how does this change the way you view forgiveness? Does it make it any easier to let go of past hurts? Why or why not?
// Challenge: This week, take a step toward forgiveness by identifying someone you need to forgive—whether for a minor offense or a deep hurt. Write their name down (or keep it in mind) and commit to praying for them daily, asking God to help you see them through His eyes. Then, take a tangible step toward releasing that hurt—this could be writing a letter (even if you don’t send it), choosing to let go of resentment when it comes up, or even having a conversation if the situation allows.
