Did Passover Always Point To Jesus?

April 13, 2025 | By Jim Burgen

What if the ancient Passover meal has always been pointing to Jesus? In this powerful Communion Week message, we connect the dots between the first Passover in Egypt, the crucifixion of Jesus, and the spiritual battle still raging today. From Moses to the Upper Room, we unpack how the blood of a lamb became the ultimate rescue plan. Communion isn’t just a tradition—it’s a declaration of freedom, victory, and identity in Christ. Ready to see the cross through fresh eyes? Let’s go there.

// Discussion Questions

  1. Read Exd 12:27,29-31. Jim explains that the Jewish Passover symbolizes the Israelites' deliverance from slavery in Egypt and points forward to Jesus as the ultimate Passover lamb. How does the story of Passover relate to the sacrifice of Jesus? Why is it considered an important in Christianity? In what ways can understanding the connection between Passover and Jesus' sacrifice influence how you view your own life and faith?
  2. Jim refers to how the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt and connects it to our own spiritual freedom through Jesus. How do the concepts of bondage and freedom presented in the Exodus story reflect on our lives today? Can you identify any 'slaveries' in your own life that you might need to confront or overcome?
  3. Read 1 Cor 5:7. What does 'For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed' mean in the view of redemption? How can embracing this truth change the way you view your mistakes and God's forgiveness in your life?
  4. The message outlines the meanings of the four cups during the Seder meal, emphasizing their connection to God's promises. How does the significance of the four cups of the Passover meal relate to the promises of God, especially the concepts of sanctification, deliverance, redemption, and Hallel, (or acceptance)? Which of these promises feels most relevant to you right now, and how can you seek to experience it more fully?
  5. Jim mentions that communion serves as an ongoing celebration of Jesus' sacrifice and encourages believers to remember how they were saved. Why do you think it is important for Christians to regularly participate in communion as a remembrance? What personal significance or meaning does communion hold for you, and how can it shape your understanding of Jesus’ sacrifice?

// Challenge: How can we integrate the lessons of Passover this week, through intentional reminders of His sacrifice leading up to celebrating Easter? Also, who might God be asking us to invite to Easter Service next Sunday?
